AFD has had a presence at Bergstrom since cargo operations started in 1998, even before the facility opened for commercial air travel, with the Aircraft Firefighting and Rescue (AFR) station.
The Communications section is responsible for radio and telephone equipment maintenance throughout the department, as well as the dispatching of alarms.
The Community Outreach Division consists of the Public Education, Community Relations and Recruiting sections.
Education Services prepares cadets to be entry-level firefighters, as well as develop and coordinate in-service training for current firefighters.

The Fire Marshal's Office is responsible for the protection of life and property through code enforcement, plans review, fire inspections, and fire cause determination.
Investigators are called to fire scenes by Operations companies or the police department when the cause of a fire is not immediately identifiable or when the fire is determined to be a criminal act.

Operations is AFD’s largest division, comprised of personnel who respond to emergency incidents from fire stations strategically located throughout the city.
Operations support oversees the purchasing and maintenance of small equipment.
Professional Standards handles all policy issues and serves as the department's legal liaison and as the liaison with the Civil Service Commission.
Safety coordinates efforts to reduce firefighter injuries and illnesses.
Special Operations ensures that AFD’s specialty teams maintain their certification and training levels. It also purchases and maintains materials and equipment.
Support functions include Finance, Purchasing, Computer Technology, Human Resources, Payroll, and Accounts Payable.
The Wildfire division addresses the potential threat of wildfires through public education, fuel (vegetation) management and effective firefighting response.
