Field Shift Schedules
Austin-Travis County EMS serves a population of over two million citizens and over 1,300 square miles, including most of Travis County and parts of Williamson and Hays Counties. ATCEMS operates 36 full-time ambulances and 7 Peak Load Units (PLUs). The 7 PLUs and 2 full-time ambulances are assigned to a 12-hour shift schedule. The remaining 34 ambulances are on a 24 hour shift schedule. Below are samples of our 12 and 24 hour shift schedules.
Medic-Field positions are classified as an "essential" position and employees will be required to work during holidays and bad weather (ice storms, flooding, etc.) when the City is otherwise closed.

12 Hour Shift (42 Hr Work Week) Sample
Twelve hour shifts are day or night and regular 12 hour units currently begin either at 07:00 for day shift and 19:00 for nights.
On-call assignments are based on the employee’s assigned work shift. For example, individuals working a 12 hour day shift schedule will be on-call for 12 hours during the day. During this time, you will be compensated at $2.00/hr on-call pay. In the event that you are called in while on-call, you will be compensated at an overtime rate for any time worked over 40 hours during that week.
New employees that have been cleared to practice should be prepared to work 12 hour night shifts and/or be assigned to different stations each shift to fulfill daily staffing needs. Shift assignments are selected based on tenure with ATCEMS.
