The City of Austin improves and maintains much of Austin’s transportation network. When figuring out where to invest, the City is guided by current and future planning initiatives led by many departments and partner agencies. The plans, programs and initiatives linked here are being used to inform the results of Mobility Talks.
Manage congestion: Managing travel demand at peak hours and strengthening transportation network connections as well as multiple mobility choices that ease congestion. This may include improvements to intersections, streets, signals, pedestrian, bicycle, and transit infrastructure. |
Improve safety: Enhancing safe travel for all users regardless of mode of travel by constructing improvements that promote use by people of all ages and abilities. This may include improvements to crosswalks, sidewalk and bicycle networks, and traffic calming devices that slow down vehicles. |
Improve connections in my neighborhood: Local improvements to street, transit, bicycle, and sidewalk networks in the neighborhood that provide connections to schools, grocery stores, neighborhood amenities, etc. Improvements may include creating more connections, filling in gaps in these networks, and adding new streets. |
Improve quality of our streets: Improving the current condition of existing streets, bridges, sidewalks, and bicycle facilities. Street enhancements may include installing new street trees, benches, bicycle racks and other amenities. |
2025 Austin Metropolitan Area Transportation Plan
The 2025 Austin Metropolitan Area Transportation Plan is the City's current transportation plan. The plan is being updated to reflect the vision for Austin’s mobility future identified by Imagine Austin.
Active Transportation Program and Bicycle Master Plan
The Active Transportation Program seeks to improve quality of life in Austin through the development of a comfortable and connected pedestrian and bicycle network that serves all ages and abilities. The Bicycle Master Plan proposes implementing elements of the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan by creating a connected and protected active transportation network that will provide additional transportation options for Austin residents and visitors.
Arterial Management
Arterial Management works to manage mobility and safety for all modes of travel on Austin’s arterial roadways using a variety of tools, including traffic signals. Other tools may include Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons, traffic cameras and the Transportation Management Center.
Corridor Improvement Programs
The Austin Transportation Department uses Corridor Improvement Programs to plan for a corridor’s changing environment and bring it up to modern expectations.
Draft Vision Zero Action Plan
Vision Zero refers to a traffic safety concept that aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on roadways to zero.

This comprehensive plan helps address Austin's most pressing issues and guides how our city transforms in the future.
Local Area Traffic Management
The Local Area Traffic Management program is a request-based program to improve the quality and safety of neighborhood streets by installing traffic calming devices along the requested street segments. Devices may include speed humps, speed tables, speed cushions, roundabouts, median islands, chicanes, and bulb-outs.
Long-Range Capital Improvement Program Strategic Plan
The Long-Range CIP Strategic Plan is released each spring and takes a data-driven, collaborative approach to long-range planning for the Capital Improvement Program.
Neighborhood Partnering Program
As a "cost and effort-share" program, the Neighborhood Partnering Program is able to leverage outside resources and build positive working relationships with neighborhoods by providing public improvement projects initiated by the community opportunities for funding and implementation.
Planning and Zoning Department Plans
Plans include adopted neighborhood plans, small area plans, and other mobility-related plans, such as transit-oriented development plans.
Sidewalk Program
In an effort to complete a citywide ADA-compliant sidewalk network, the goal of the Sidewalk Master Plan is to provide an objective mechanism for the City’s use in prioritizing sidewalk construction projects.
Safe Routes to School Program
The Safe Routes to School Program aims to tackle barriers that prevent students from walking and biking to school.
Urban Trails Program and Master Plan
The Urban Trails Program promotes non-motorized pathways for recreation and active transportation. The Urban Trails Master Plan provides guidelines and plans for developing urban trails.
CAMPO 2040 Regional Transportation Plan
The CAMPO 2040 Regional Transportation Plan is the active long-range plan for the capital area.
Capital Metro Transportation Authority (Capital Metro)
Initiatives include Connections 2025, an in-depth review of the transit system; Project Connect, the vision for Central Texas’ high-capacity transit system; and Project Connect: Central Corridor 2.0, a relaunch of the Project Connect Central Corridor study with the goal of identifying a high-capacity transit solution for Central Texas' busiest area.
MobilityATX
MobilityATX is an online mobility idea platform hosted by private organizations. The ideas posted to MobilityATX are shared with the appropriate managing agencies for consideration of further action.

My35 was launched by the Texas Transportation Commission as a way to increase citizen participation in the transportation planning process for the I-35 corridor.
